Automating Your Archives: From Manual Command to Nightly Job
I used to run tgarchiveconsole by hand. Every. Single.
Time. It felt like feeding a pet rock (pointless) and mildly embarrassing.
You’re doing the same thing, right?
Typing that command, hoping it works, forgetting it for three days, then panicking when your archive is out of date?
Tgarchiveconsole solves the what (but) not the when. That’s on you.
So let’s fix the when.
On Linux or macOS: open your crontab with crontab -e. Add this line:
0 2 * /usr/local/bin/tgarchiveconsole --sync > /var/log/tgarchive.log 2>&1
That runs it daily at 2 a.m. (yes, cron uses 24-hour time).
The > /var/log/tgarchive.log 2>&1 saves both output and errors to a file. (Pro tip: check that log before you assume it worked.)
Windows users: open Task Scheduler. Create Basic Task → set trigger (daily, 2 a.m.) → action (Start a program) → browse to tgarchiveconsole.exe. In “Add arguments”, type --sync.
Leave “Start in” blank unless you moved the executable somewhere weird.
Now the pro-level move: wrap it in a script. A .sh file on Mac/Linux. A .bat on Windows.
Why? Because now you can add logic. Log rotation.
Email alerts. Webhook pings.
I use a simple shell script that sends me a Slack message if the run fails. No magic. Just if [ $? -ne 0 ]; then curl -X POST ... fi.
This isn’t overkill. It’s survival. Manual archives rot.
Automated ones breathe.

Beyond Default Output: Custom Scripts That Actually Work

I run tgarchiveconsole every week. The raw JSON it spits out? Useless without processing.
You get everything. Timestamps, user IDs, message text, links, media metadata. But the CLI flags only scratch the surface.
Want messages from just three people? Or only those with “invoice” and a .pdf link? No flag does that.
So I wrote a Python script.
It reads the JSON, loops through each message, and applies filters you define.
