Here’s what I changed:

PRAGMA journal_mode = WAL;

PRAGMA cache_size = 10000;

So PRAGMA synchronous = NORMAL;

That bought me time. But only time.

You’ll hit the same wall at 750k messages. Or sooner if you filter heavily.

So I moved to PostgreSQL. Not for fun. For survival.

Tgarchiveconsole supports it. But the docs don’t tell you how to adapt the schema.

Drop AUTOINCREMENT. Add SERIAL for IDs. Cast timestamps to TIMESTAMP WITH TIME ZONE.

Keep foreign keys (or) lose message-thread relationships.

Connection string?

Query latency dropped from 8.2 seconds to 0.3 seconds for “crypto” in last 30 days. That’s not incremental. It’s night and day.

Test integrity after migration. Run SELECT COUNT(*) on both sides. Check a random thread manually.

Missing timezone handling breaks date filters. Silent. Deadly.

Foreign key constraints are not optional. They’re your guardrail.

Then I created an index named tgmessages with these fields: messageid, channel_name, text, date. No extra config needed. Meilisearch guesses types correctly (unlike) Elasticsearch, which makes you write mapping JSON at 2 a.m.

Tgarchiveconsole has built-in export hooks. I pointed one at http://localhost:7700/indexes/tg_messages/documents (and) boom, new messages auto-index.

Frontend? Just swap your SQL /search endpoint for /api/search that hits Meilisearch. If you’re self-hosting, change two lines in your JS fetch call.

Done.

Pro tip: After the first full sync, only send new messages to Meilisearch. Use --since in your export hook or track lastmessageid in a file.
